Bisacodyl is used for the short-term treatment of occasional constipation.
Bisacodyl is a stimulant laxative that acts directly on the colon. It increases intestinal motility by stimulating the nerve endings in the colonic mucosa and promotes the accumulation of water and electrolytes in the bowel lumen. This combination of increased movement and hydration softens the stool and facilitates bowel evacuation.
The usual adult dose is 5-10 mg once daily; do not use for more than 7 consecutive days.
